How it works for riders
A rider opens the app and enters where they want to go. Rydze immediately searches for drivers whose route passes near the rider's pickup and destination. Not drivers who are nearby — drivers whose actual path goes in the right direction. Results appear on the map in real-time as drivers enter their own destinations.
The rider picks a driver, books for $3.75, and that's it. No messaging. No negotiating. No waiting for a reply.
How it works for drivers
A driver enters their destination — the same way they'd enter it in any navigation app. Before they even start driving, Rydze shows riders along their route who need a ride in that direction.
As the driver moves, matching updates. The system only looks forward along the remaining route — it won't suggest a rider the driver already passed. New riders appear as they enter the system. Previously shown riders stay visible so nobody disappears from the map.
What's under the hood
Rydze uses spatial route analysis to match riders and drivers. When a driver creates a trip, their route is stored as a geographic line — the actual path they'll take, not a straight line between two points. When a rider searches, the system checks which driver routes pass within range of both their pickup and their destination, and in the correct order along the route.
This matters because direction matters. A driver heading north on the same road isn't helpful if the rider needs to go south. Proximity alone isn't enough — the geometry of the route has to work.
Matching runs continuously. Every time a driver's location updates, the system rechecks for new riders along the remaining route. Every time a rider enters a destination, the system checks all active drivers. The result is a network that gets more useful with every participant, updating in real-time rather than waiting for someone to refresh a listing.
Why this matters
Bulletin-board carpooling works for long-distance trips planned in advance. If you're driving Montreal to Toronto next Friday, posting a listing and waiting for responses makes sense. The trip is scheduled, the route is fixed, there's time to coordinate.
But everyday trips don't work like that. You decide to go to the store, you want a ride now, and you need it to take 15 minutes, not an hour of coordinating. Real-time matching makes carpooling practical for the trips people actually take every day — commutes, errands, appointments. The trips that fill roads with single-occupancy cars.
